Licensing (plain English)
Important: this site does not grant rights. Always confirm usage rights on the source page for each specific image.
What to look for on an image page
- Public Domain / PD / No known restrictions (wording varies)
- CC0 (Creative Commons “No Rights Reserved”)
- A clear Rights or License statement that explicitly allows reuse
Fast checklist
- Open the image’s detail page.
- Find the rights/license area (often “Rights & Access”, “License”, “Usage”).
- If it’s unclear, choose a different image or a different source.
- Save the source link and creator/collection info for attribution (even when not required).
Common gotchas
- Collections vary: within the same site, some items are open, some are restricted.
- Trademarks & privacy: public domain doesn’t override trademark rights or privacy concerns.
- Edits & compilations: some scans have added restrictions; check the specific rights note.
